    Title

AHRI.Telephonic survey conducted in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, to assess tobacco use status and cessation rate between 2021-2022

    Country
    Name Country code
    South Africa ZA
    Abstract

Questions remain regarding tobacco use and cessation behaviours in low- and middle-income countries like South Africa. Understanding the patterns of tobacco use and cessation can help inform the design of tobacco treatment interventions, including those integrated with HIV and TB care. The contribution of tobacco use to the burden of these conditions is unknown. We analysed the associations between current tobacco smoking and four important CDs and NCDs in Vukuzazi, a cross-sectional study of individuals aged 15 and older conducted between 2018-2020 in a demographic surveillance area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The purpose of the telephonic survey was to a) evaluate current tobacco, use and changes since the baseline assessment among HIV-negative and HIV-positive participants in the Vukuzazi study b) specifically understand how tobacco use was impacted by the National Tobacco Ban that was instituted during the South African national COVID-19 response. Results of this survey will also be used in a simulation model to project the clinical and economic outcomes of tobacco use and cessation among this population.

    Kind of Data

Survey data. Telephonic informed consent and answering of questionnaire on (a) Current smoking status, (b) Electronic cigarette use, (c) Smokeless tobacco use, (d) Cessation history, (e) Impact on smoking during tobacco ban, (f) Other health updates and, quality of life questions.

    Unit of Analysis

All persons that were previously enrolled in Vukuzazi Study and reported on baseline being current smokers; former smokers and never smoked tobacco – are eligible for Tobacco survey.

    Coverage

    Geographic Coverage

    uMkhanyakude district in northern KwaZulu-Natal

    Universe

Among people with diagnosed HIV at the baseline assessment, we will attempt to contact all those who reported current and former tobacco smoking at that time and a sex-stratified random sample of those who reported, never tobacco smoking at that time. This will be approximately 448 current smokers, 50 former smokers, and 200 never smokers, for a total of 750 people with HIV. We will also contact 500 current smokers, 50 former smokers, and 200 never smokers among those who were HIV-negative at the baseline assessment, for a total of 750 people without HIV at baseline. The total number of participants with and without HIV will be 1448.
