    Title

    Abstract

The Africa Health Research Institute conducts continuous surveillance within a surveillance area in southern uMkhanyakude district in KwaZulu-Natal South Africa. This involves a mixture of telephonic and in-person interviews with household proxy respondents, and in-person interviews with all resident household members aged 15 and above.

This dataset contains a subset of data collected between 2020 and 2023 as part of the response to Covid-19. This includes data on the impact of Covid-19 on health and economic wellbeing, and willingness and uptake of Covid-19 vaccines, as well as a four-item mental health screening tool (PHQ-4). These questions were asked in multiple ways:

    · To one household member acting as a proxy respondent every four months
    · To all resident members every 12 months
    · To a randomly selected subset of residents every 2 weeks in Apirl to December 2020

Users of the dataset are strongly encouraged to refer to the annual questionnaire documents since exact wording and skip patterns changed across the years of data collection.

Details of the project as initially created in 2020 are available from
